Matawan Olympian Ushers in an Exciting Matawan Day 2016

A canopy of grey, misty skies greeted the volunteers as they arrived to set up for the event threatening a possible rain out.  Yet by the time the vendors, food and rides were set,  the clouds miraculously rolled away revealing the sun and beautiful blue skies!  The clearing occurred just as the parade for Monica Aksamit, Olympic Bronze saber medalist approached the stage area. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect nor the day more magnificent for the official start to Matawan Day 2016!
The special parade honoring Monica was a great beginning to the day. Several state and local dignitaries honored Monica with speeches and the mayor  presented Monica with a proclamation and the Key to Matawan Borough in a ceremony following the parade. After Monica ended the ceremony with a few words, she spent the remainder of the day posing for photos and autographing post cards much to the delight of her many fans.

By mid afternoon, Main Street was packed.  The beer garden was in full swing and food vendors were cooking dozens of burgers, dogs, shish kebobs, ribs and other favorites while visitors were treated to the talents of local vocalists, bands, dancers and dj entertainment.  Others enjoyed the rides, shopping at the several craft tables and talking to many of the local businesses that spent the day showcasing their products. Popcorn, ice cream, cupcakes and other treats rounded out the day.
By most accounts, Matawan Day was quite a success, drawing a significant crowd that kept many vendors busy.  We certainly hope that everyone enjoyed the day and found it equally as successful as we did.
